  • Digital Access- (full electronic participation in society) Users of technology need to be aware that not everyone has the same opportunities when it comes to technology, so different resources may need to be provided. To be productive in society, we need to commit to making sure that no one is denied digital access.

  • Digital Commerce- (electronic buying and selling of goods) People or technological users have to be aware and understand that a large share of the market economy is being done electronically. The buyer or seller needs to be aware of the issues associated with electronic exchanging of goods, as much as there are legal exchanges taking place, one has to be aware of illegal activities such as illegal downloading, pornography and gambling.

  • Digital Communication- (electronic exchange of information) a person’s ability to communicate with other people is one of the most important changes within the digital revolution, communication options have increased to offer a wide variety of options (e.g., cellphones, emails, instant messaging.) Now people have the opportunity to communicate with anyone from anywhere at any time.

  • Digital Literacy- (the process of teaching and learning about technology and the use of technology) as new technologies are finding their way into the workplace that are not being used at schools (e.g., videoconferencing.) so a renewed focus must be made on what technologies must be taught as well as how it should be used.

  • Digital Etiquette- (electronic standards of conduct or procedure) Because before people use technology they do not learn digital etiquette, many people feel uncomfortable talking to others about their digital etiquette and often rules and regulations are created  or the technology is simply banned  to stop inappropriate  use. Sometimes it’s not enough just creating rules, everyone has to be taught to be a responsible digital citizen in this new digital society.

  • Digital Law- (electronic responsibility for actions and deeds) this deals with the ethics of technology in a society. Unethical use arises in the form of crime and/or theft and ethical use manifests itself in the form of abiding by the laws of society. Hacking, stealing or causing damage to other peoples work, identity or property online is a crime, so people have to know that these laws apply to everyone who works or play online.

  • Digital Rights and Responsibility (The freedoms extended to everyone in a digital world) Just as in any constitution where there is a bill of rights, there is a basic set of rights extended to every digital citizen, digital citizens have the right to privacy and free speech, but with these rights also come responsibilities as well.

  • Digital Health and Wellness- (physical and psychological well-being in a digital technological world) Issues such as eye safety, repetitive stress syndrome and sound ergonomic practices need to be addressed in a new technological world, besides the physical issues there are those of psychological which are becoming more worrying such as internet addiction. Because digital citizenship includes a culture where technology users are taught how to protect themselves through education and training users have to be taught that there are inherent dangers of technology.

  • Digital Security- (electronic precautions to guarantee safety) Digital society is the same as any society in the sense that in any society there are individuals who steal, deface or disrupt other people so it is not enough to trust other members in the community for our own safety, as much as in our homes we put locks on our doors and fire alarms in our houses to provide some level and sense of security we need to do the same in the digital world by having virus protections, backup data and surge control of our equipment and as responsible citizens we need to protect our data and information from outside forces that might have the intension to cause harm or disruption.
